Icons (2017-present)

Je cherche dans ma série « Icons » (les icônes, en français) à exprimer dans chaque toile une figure – une forme, un signe ou un symbole – qui est à la fois représentative et polysémique. Mes formes sont inventées dans un sens kafkaïen, tel que Kafka parle du « mot » dans son journal : « Mes doutes entourent chaque mot, je les vois avant que je vois le mot, mais alors ! Je ne vois aucunement le mot, je l’invente. »[1] Ce processus d’invention, selon le théoricien Ihab Hassan, « nécessite de la patience. La patience est une forme de refus ; elle résiste à l’accommodation dans un monde où la signification s’acquiert bien trop aisément. »[2] Les différents degrés d’ambiguïté exprimé dans mon « Icon » peinte, permet au spectateur plusieurs interprétations de la forme. Dans ce sens, mes « Icons » font des pieds-de-nez ; elles subvertissent et agrandissent la fonction contemporaine de l’icône – contrairement à celles qui foisonnent et envahissent notre quotidien – le réduisant aux icônes immédiatement reconnaissables et univoques – tels les symboles sur l’écran d’un smartphone. Similairement, comme peinture, mes « Icons » respectent le sens originel de la double fonction de l’icône, décrit par Michel Thévoz, comme « objet matériel et sensible d’une part, et médiation vers la transcendance invisible d’autre part ».[3]
La série « Icons », en cours depuis 2017, sera composée de 200 huiles sur toiles aux dimensions variables. Au jour d’aujourd’hui, plus d’un quart de la production finale projetée (environ soixante toiles) ont été achevées. La future exposition, comprenant la totalité des « Icons », sera intitulée « Salamandra’s Icons », attestant de la qualité personnelle de cette collection des figures.

Each painting in my series “Icons” seeks to express a “figure”–a form, sign or symbol, which is at once representative and polysemical. My forms are invented in Kafkaesque style, akin to the style in which Kafka speaks about the “word” in his diary: “My doubts stand in a circle around every word, I see them before I see the word, but what then! I do not see the word at all, I invent it.”[1] This process of invention, according to theorist Ihab Hassan, “…requires patience. Patience is a kind of refusal; it resists accommodation in a world of easy meanings.”[2] The varying degrees of ambiguity expressed in my painted “Icon” allow the viewer several interpretations of the form. In this way, my “Icons” are thumb-noses; they subvert as well as enlarge the contemporary function of the icon–contrary to those which invade and overrun our daily life–reducing it to icons immediately recognizable and unequivocal–like symbols found on the screens of smartphones. Similarly, like painting, my “Icons” respect their original meaning of the icon’s double function, described by Michel Thévoz as “a material and sensitive object on the one hand, and a form of meditation towards an invisible transcendence, on the other.”[3]
The series “Icons,” in progress since 2017, is composed of 200 oils on canvas in varying dimensions. As of today more than one quarter of the final projected production (roughly sixty paintings) have been completed. The future exhibition, including all of the “Icons” will be entitled “Salamandra’s Icons,” attesting to the personal quality of this collection of figures.
